30 minutes Yoga Nidra deep relaxation with Sankalpa repetition
20 minute Tratakam steady gazing on a candle flame or crystal or symbol
20 minute Chakra Dhyanam visualisation of chakra energy centres
Yoga Nidra is the first step towards Meditation. During yoga nidra the external senses withdraw into the mind. This is called pratyahara in yogic terminology. The second stage towards meditation is concentration dharana. During both these stages the mind will oscillate from the point of focus to other thoughts or sleep. When the mind becomes focused on the point of concentration without oscillating and you know you are the observer of your mind and the process of meditation then this is true meditation, dhyana. If you could be aware of yourself in deep sleep, this would be meditation also. Both the style of meditational practice and regularity of practising are important to induce the state of meditation. Keep practising yoga nidra with the awareness of being an objective observer of all your experiences and thoughts, continually letting go of distractions, and you will achieve the state of true meditation.
Chakra Dhyanam is a specific technique of visualising the body’s energy centres. It can be practiced in a seated meditative pose or lying down in shavasana. Chakra Dhyanam has both a calming and refreshing effect on the body and mind.
Tratakam is the technique of steady gazing into a candle flame, crystal ball or symbol of choice. This practice calms the mind and improves concentration. It releases deep-seated stress and awakens the minds dormant potential. It can be used in conjunction with your own meditation practice to enhance your experience.
Yoga Nidra Deep Relaxation with Swami Muktibodha Four different practices of 18 minutes each in duration
Preparation for the practice of yoga Nidra is most important. Make sure you can practise without any interference including your phone. Preferably lie on your back. You may need a cushion under your head and a blanket to keep you warm. Place your arms 20cms away from your sides with the palms upward; legs separated in alignment with your hips; lift your chest and draw your shoulder blades closer then relax down again; upper and lower teeth slightly separated so your tongue can relax behind your lower teeth. Once you are sure that you are comfortable, lie still and motionless throughout the practice. Stillness with awareness is the first stage of meditation.
